How Photo-Eye Sensors Work

The photo-eye system consists of two sensors mounted 4-6 inches above the floor on either side of the garage door opening. One sensor contains an infrared LED that emits an invisible beam; the other contains a receiver that detects the beam. When the beam is unbroken, the system allows the door to close. If anything breaks the beam.a person, pet, bicycle, or even a leaf blowing through.the door immediately stops and reverses direction.

The beauty of this system is its simplicity and reliability. There are no moving parts in the sensors themselves, and the infrared beam works in all lighting conditions.

Common Sensor Problems and Solutions

While photo-eye sensors are reliable, they can experience issues:

Misalignment

The most common problem is sensor misalignment. Each sensor has an indicator light.typically green when aligned and blinking or red when misaligned. If your door won't close and the opener light blinks (often 10 times), check sensor alignment first.

To realign sensors, loosen the wing nut or mounting screw, adjust the sensor angle until both indicators show solid lights, then tighten the mounting hardware. Both sensors must "see" each other for the system to work.

Dirty Lenses

Dust, cobwebs, and garage grime can accumulate on sensor lenses, blocking the beam. Clean both lenses regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the lens coating.

Wiring Issues

Sensors connect to the opener unit via thin wires that can be damaged by garage activity, pests, or age. Inspect wires for breaks, fraying, or loose connections. Wire damage requires professional repair.

Sunlight Interference

Direct sunlight hitting the receiver sensor can overwhelm the infrared beam, causing intermittent problems. If this occurs in your garage, a simple cardboard tube or purchased shade can block the sunlight while still allowing the infrared beam to pass.

Sensor Failure

Sensors do eventually fail. If cleaning and alignment don't resolve issues, the sensors may need replacement. This is a straightforward repair for a qualified technician.

Testing Your Safety Sensors

Regular testing ensures your safety systems are working properly. We recommend monthly testing:

Photo-Eye Test

1. Open the garage door fully 2. Place an object (like a cardboard box) in the door's path, breaking the beam between the sensors 3. Press the close button on your remote or wall control 4. The door should not move, or if it starts to move, it should reverse immediately 5. Remove the obstruction and verify the door closes normally

Mechanical Reverse Test

1. Open the garage door fully 2. Place a 2x4 board flat on the floor in the center of the door opening 3. Press the close button 4. When the door contacts the board, it should immediately reverse 5. If the door doesn't reverse, adjust the opener's force settings or call for service

When Safety Sensors Are Not Enough

While safety sensors provide crucial protection, they're not foolproof. The photo-eye beam is only 4-6 inches high, meaning a child lying flat could potentially go undetected. This is why additional safety practices are essential:
